Generation Next Competition and Fashion Show

The hairstylists of Verve Hair Lounge are the official team of the Generation Next Competition this coming Thursday.  Our team mates will be closing up our North Vancouver shop for the afternoon to start the production of transforming the models for this energizing event.  We are very excited to be involved in helping the local emerging design talent.  So put on your locally made designs and come join us for the fun!

Established in 2007, Generation Next provides a platform for new designers (who have been in business for 3 years or less) and has helped launch collections for such well known talent as: Nicole Bridger, Carny Love, Lara Presber, Elroy, Red Jade, Two of Hearts and last year’s winner Ella Peru. Not only does Generation Next provide a composite fashion show for our newest designers but it also sets the winning designer on the path to success with an amazing prize package worth $10,000!

This season’s fashion show will feature the three finalists plus last year’s winner Su-Hui Chu for Ella Peru. There will be a slient auction with lots of fabulous local fashion and much more.  Tickets are $15 and can be purchased in advance at: twigg & hottie (main st), Riot (commercial drive), Dream (gastown), Little Dream (granville island), and Tenth & Proper (point grey) and at the door.

You found your wings, lift slow through charcoal skies. Weighted, I remain.

Seven years later, I move forward, choose light. Paint pictures not of you but for you – and even now I cannot find the words to write. Still just a heartbeat, still just a breath away, goodbye seems too strong a word for an absence only as complete as I choose to believe. Seven years later, I know that you would want to see me smile.

Verve Hair Lounge and Art Gallery is very excited to be showcasing the talent of urban artist Indigo in her first solo show, Towards the Light.  This talented young artist has seen much acclaim in the past year, having showcased her talent internationally in cities such as Toronto, San Francisco, London, Amsterdam, Berlin and of course her home base of Vancouver.

Known for her intricately cut and softly shaded stencils, Indigo has contributed to many beautiful and heartwarming murals at home and around the world. Recent projects in Vancouver include the Paint Your Faith mural at Abbott and Hastings, the new Beatty Street Mural, Larger than Life at Ayden Gallery and a collaborative project at W2 Storeyum titled All Your Walls, her first foray into freehand work with spray paint. Her hand-drawn method of stencil design has clearly developed this young artist’s eye and has made her recent evolution into other mediums seamless and strong.

Towards the Light consists of a series of oil paintings, drawings and prints that explore the experience of loss, grief, and regained hope. It is a tribute to Jennifer Lynn Buhler, Indigo’s best friend throughout her youth, who passed away in a car crash in 2003. All of source images used in this exhibition were created in collaboration with photographer Miles de Courcy, with hair by Verve’s Amber George and makeup by Marlayna Pincott.

Shu Uemura Essence Absolue has arrived!

We have been eagerly anticipating the arrival of this miracle oil which has been touted in magazines such as Elle and making even the most skeptical blogger gush.  This product has been sold out WORLDWIDE for months!  Essence Absolue is a smoothing emollient brilliance who’s main ingredient, Camellia Oil, was used by old world geishas to reveal their hairs true beauty, smoothness, suppleness and shine.  What’s even better?  This liquid amazing-ness works on all hair types and it can be used as either a pre-shampoo or a leave-in.  I think Winterbelle says it best… read what she had to say here.  And FYI, Verve is the only hair salon in North Vancouver to carry it, lucky us!  You should see our hair, it looks fabulous.

Verve is busy, busy, BUSY!

It has been awhile since our last update…. We have been busy busy bees over here at Verve.  Our hairstylists have been doing hair all over the place!

Amber’s most exciting news was the amazing opportunity she had working with Redken at the Olympics Closing Ceremonies.  She was working with the Aerial team on their wigs, which along with the rest of their costume, will be heading to the Olympic Museum in Switzerland.  Amber came back from this experience elated and over the moon!  It was a lifetime favourite of hers for sure.

Jonah has come and gone from his annual educational foray to the Toronto Redken Exchange for the Redken Artist Connection.  For those that don’t know, it is Jonah’s 10th year as a National Artist for Redken.  At the RAC he learned some techniques for teaching, styling and cutting and inspiration from Sam Villa and Brent Borreson.  On top of that, it’s always great for him to meet up and connect with the rest of the Canadian team.  He returns to us full of energy and enthusiasm!!  We love it and are so proud of him.

We are also welcoming our newest team mate, Lindsey!  Lindsey is a total hair nerd and Redken-ite who hails from Vernon.  This girl has been doing hair for 6 years and has recently moved to North Vancouver.  Shortly after moving here she set her sights on working at our hair salon, and boy are we glad.  She is a burst of energy, determination and drive into our team…and she lives and breathes hair…just like Amber and Jonah.  We welcome Lindsey with a big Verve hug!

There is much more to share…but only so much space.  Keep an eye out for our next newsletter for more news.  If you don’t receive it, sign up on the contact page.  We also have some upcoming announcements to make…we are adding to our service offerings in the future….you’ll just have to wait and see!!

Happy Birthday to Verve!!

We are happy to be celebrating our 1st Birthday!!  It has been an amazing year and we are looking forward to the next.  Book your appointment and receive a party favour from us to you.  And look forward to our Birthday Month and keep checking back, as we will have wonderful Birthday Presents for you to take advantage of starting next week!!

Crave Vancouver gave us a wonderful present… they have listed us as one of 8 of the best salons in Vancouver to go to, and the only one in North Vancouver!  For all that don’t know, CRAVE vancouver innovatively connects urban gals to the sassiest, gutsiest, most inspiring people they need to know in Vancouver.  This is what they had to say about us: The experience and a passion of the stylists in Verve is reflected in the clients quality hair and satisfaction.  This North Vancouver salon produces “artful hair design” tailored to perfect your signature look.”

We are also expanding our team and continuing our interview process and have narrowed it down to some really great talent…so..stay tuned!

And let 2010 begin!

Wow, so another Holiday Season is behind us, and the first for the Verve hair team.  We had an amazing season and all of us are very much looking forward to the New Year.  2009 was a great year for the team; with art shows, charity fundraising events, photo shoots, education and being voted the #1 Hair Salon in North Vancouver topping the list!  2010 is fixing for more of the same…. as we say here in the Verve house, it’s all in the name of “hair nerd energy”.

Jonah will be starting his educational year off this month with a trip to Kamloops to teach his new and improved “Cut and Know Why” class.  His students will have some amazing tips, tricks and inspiration to start their New Year off with a boost!

Amber has had some more of her work featured in magazines and blogs.  You can check her work from a photo shoot in New York City on pages 56 and 57 of Model Venture magazine.  As well, her recent shoot for Adhesif Clothing Spring 2010 was recently featured on Chic.TV Blog and My Favourite Things.  And more recently in February’s issue of FASHION MAGAZINE.  Also, in December, Amber and the Verve team had the pleasure of working with the students from the Art Institute Fashion Marketing Program on their “Red Light District” Show.

In December, we launched our newest Art Show collective:  “Trunk Show” a photography collaboration featuring the works of Mike Chatwin, Lauren Stryer, Aaron Mallin and Barry Thibodeau.  This collection is amazing and original and not to be missed!  We also used this opportunity to throw a fundraiser to raise money for Wigs for Kids!  It was a giant success with some great sponsorships!  You can keep up with the going ons of the Verve gallery at our blog.

And into 2010….  All the best to you and your loved ones!
