Linzo wins 1st Place in BC Competition!!

We are so proud to announce that Linzo was recently awarded first place in a live competition held at the annual Allied Beauty Association’s Convention!! Linzo has spent the last 2 months preparing her design and colour for the competition. This live competition brings out some of the province’s best emerging hairstylists. She executed her design, inspired by the Northern Lights, during a live competition with a time limit of 45 minutes. We are so proud of our team mate!! She will be heading to the Toronto ABA Convention in 2013 to compete against the winners in all provinces! Aside from jumping up and down with excitement, the team also took in some education, sitting in on a seminar with updo hairdresser extra-ordinaire Martin Parsons, and the Redken team of artists. It was a day in hair nerd heaven!

Vanessa Choot, editor of Modern Mix Vancouver Magazine, recently came in to experience the Verve service. She wrote an article on her experience and the Redken Chromatics line, as well as some other fun little tid bits. Check out her article here.

Amber wins National Competition!! And makes her way to Toronto Fashion Week!

We are so excited and thrilled to announce that Creative Director Amber George has been named the winner in the Rowenta Versa Style Competition! This National level competition called out to Hairstylists across Canada to submit video “auditions” using the Rowenta Versa Style Iron. This innovative iron is a unique curling system that allows for several styling options. Amber went into full creative mode in learning the tool and seeing what it could do. The results? Award winning styles! As part of her win, Amber will fly to Toronto to join the Backstage hair team at World Mastercard Fashion Week. While in Toronto, Amber will style hair for Canada’s top fashion designers and will also be in attendance of the shows. Be sure to follow Amber on her journey by following our Twitter and Facebook pages where she will be sending us updates and photos of her adventures in hair!

We are also very pleased and excited to mention that Kelsey will be lending her talents to a very worthwhile and dear to our hearts cause. On March 21st, 2012 Kelsey will head up to SFU for the day where she will participate in the Balding For Dollars benefit Cutathon. All proceeds from this event will go to help BC Children’s Hospital. Their goal with this program is to raise awareness and funds to support the Oncology, Hematology, and BMT (Bone Marrow Transplant) programs at BC Children’s Hospital. Way to go Kelsey!!

Photography Exhibit featuring Marshal Chupa

Verve Hair Lounge is very excited to be featuring the art work of photographer Marshal Chupa. This is Marshal’s first solo show and we couldn’t be more happy… as it is also our first solo photography exhibit! We came across this young man at a collaborative event and were immediately impressed with his eye and his skill level. After chatting with Marshal it became very clear that his work could stand on it’s own. So we invite you to come and meet Marshal and view his work!

Upon meeting Marshal, it becomes clear that he isn’t just any young artist. His talent is largely self taught and his drive and passion for this art form shines through. You get a sense that this is his calling in life and it is hard to understand that he is just starting out. Marshal speaks of an instant obsession with taking pictures from the moment in grade 10 that he first picked up a camera. Add into that his 7 month journey to Central America and his second passion for travel was ignited. Marshal’s knack for capturing a moment of emotion is absolutely stunning. His photographs can leave you lingering in thought, weaving your own story into his images. His goal and dream is to use this art form and his passion for travel to make a difference in the world. This will absolutely be achieved and beyond, there is no doubt, as he has just begun his journey.

Happy Holidays! with love from the Creative Director

This has been an amazing year under the Verve roof! We are finishing up our 3rd year over here and very much looking forward to the 4th! This year has been a blast and has gone by so swiftly. The team has really gelled and grown together and I am really looking forward to seeing everyone advance further into the dream and the vision. This year we saw Maggie reach her end as my assistant and grow into a full fledged member of our hair roster. And she has transitioned beautifully into this role, having done it now for the past 5 months. She has had quite the year! Starting out 2011, her and I attended the Redken Symposium, along with 10,000 hairstylists from around the globe. What an opportunity for such a young stylist! Linzo has also had a great year! This year she placed 3rd in the province in the Fully Qualified Women’s Cut and Colour category. This has amped her up, and she is already brainstorming for next years comp. Look out BC, she is one to watch! This year also brought us a wonderful addition to the team with Kelsey. Kelsey has spent her first 6 months exploring all of her options in the industry and has recently decided to also compete in 2012. And, I reached a career high for myself this year as well, when I placed as one of the top 5 Fashion Hairstylists in Canada for the Contessa awards. This was a dream of mine since I was a young hairstylist to represent at the Contessa’s. To finally reach this goal while backed by my superstar hair team was beyond comprehension. And of course, you voted us as one of the best salon’s in North Vancouver and West Vancouver for a third year! And then there is the education… we are NERDS! We have attended numerous education events within the city, and I myself have traveled to Las Vegas, LA and Toronto. And we are already making plans for our education in 2012!

All of the love and accolades mean nothing without the everyday at Verve Hair Lounge. Every day under our roof brings something new and exciting, we are blessed with truly amazing and wonderful clients. The support for our team, our vibe and our vision has been absolutely breath taking. We love what we do, and having the love returned is the ultimate reward. And from this love, brings our inspiration to give back to our community. And this is what brings me the most joy. This year we supported and sponsored several initiatives including the Ride to Conquer Cancer, Because I am a Girl Foundation, Salvation Army, F*ck Cancer, and Homelessness Action Week. All of these ideas and contributions are purely bred from our individual interactions with our clients and our own personal lives. Our connection to the community comes from our connection to you, our clients. Thank you so much for all of your love, support and most importantly your inspiration that leads us to do such wonderful work. Thank you for helping myself and the Verve team to make our dreams a reality and making our daily lives within our household a loving and supported environment. We look forward to what the future holds, and we are thankful to have you be a part of it.

Contessa Finals!!

The call came in and our Creative Director Amber George has been named a Finalist in the Session Hairstylist of the Year category for the Contessa Awards!! The Contessa Awards are the Canadian Hairstylist of the Year Awards hosted by Salon Magazine. The Contessa’s are the longest running, most prestigious awards honouring excellence and creativity in salons and among salon professionals across Canada. This honour places Amber in the top 5 in Canada! And we are proud to say that she is the only Vancouver stylist in the Session Hairstylist Category. You can check out her entry and the rest of the finalists at Salon52. She will be heading to Toronto at the end of the month for the Gala! We wish her good luck and a huge congratulations to all finalists and semi-finalists on their achievement!

The newest art show is up and having rave reviews! Paint… by Anthony Wilson is an exploration in Black and White abstracts. Anthony is an all around artist. This show at Verve will showcase Anthony’s work as a painter in the abstract, but he works in various realms. Anthony is primarily a poet and screenwriter whose work has been seen in such publications as littleepisodes, vagabond press and the strand. Anthony also enjoys working with paint and other items he finds along the journey of life. Through collage and abstract work, Anthony explores his creativity on a completely different realm.

Maggie has been promoted! After a year of Advanced Training with our team, she is now an extremely strong hairdresser! She is now working a few days as our New Talent hairstylist. She will be doing hair a few days a week, and for a limited time we will be offering her services at Introductory New Talent prices. She is amazing and we are excited about her progression within our team! Look out for our new Salon Host and Assistant!

Contessa’s Semi-Finals!

We are very happy to announce that Creative Director Amber George has been selected as a Semi-Finalist in the Session Hairstylist of the Year category for the prestigious Contessa Awards. The Contessa Awards are the Canadian Hairstylist of the Year awards judged by Canada’s top hairstyling judges. This honour places Amber in the top 10 in the country along with some of Canada’s most elite hairstylists. Send your good vibes her way to the finals…

A few months ago the Kyla Rawlyn’s band came in to Verve to film their newest music video “Crossed Paths”. You will recognize many locations as some of your favourite North Vancouver locales including the beautiful Lower Lonsdale neighbourhood. Our newest art installation in the Verve Art Gallery will be going up this weekend! The artist, Anthony Wilson, is a local Vancouver Abstract Artist. Summer time!!

Wow! The Verve team has been busy this summer!! We are very proud of our accomplishments… We managed to have a very successful inaugural event for Because I am a Girl in July. The event was in conjunction with the Lower Lonsdale Business Association’s Party at the Pier. We had a blast! And more importantly raised awareness and funds for the cause!! We are very much looking forward to next year!

We are continuing our fundraising efforts through September. Partial proceeds from our art sales will be donated. We have wonderful photography art by Jan Snarski, Crissy Arseneau and Aaron Smedley. This is a great way to beautify your space and make your heart feel good. Please come in and take a look. If you want to support our team in our efforts you can also make a donation directly here.

The team has also been involved with the charity “F-Cancer” and the Misguided Goddess project. This art collaboration event recently had it’s second installation held at the Vivo Media Arts Center. The Verve Hair Lounge Team worked on photoshoots and sponsorship for the event and had a blast! Working with the wonderful contributors and for such a great cause is so inspiring to us! We are very much looking forward to Misguided Goddess 3 coming up in 2012!!

Ever wonder how Gisele Bundchen gets her luscious locks? According to Lou Lou Magazine editors the answer is Shu Uemura Kaze Wave. Check out a video of the editors discussing the look on Breakfast Television. And, of course, Kaze Wave is available at Verve!

Because I am a Girl!

The Verve Team is the proud organizer of Western Canada’s Inaugural “Because I am a Girl” Fundraiser. Because I am a Girl is Plan’s global initiative to empower girls and all the children around them to eliminate poverty. They will educate girls, give them nourishment, health care and protection, so they can flourish and go on to improve the lives of those around them. We will be hosting a Pink LemonAid Stand complete with Bake Sale, Face Painting, Hopscotch and other fun things! The event will be held at the Pier on Lower Lonsdale in conjunction with the “Party at the Pier”. Sunday July 17th from 11-4. Check out the event page on Facebook. The Verve Team has also been involved with an upcoming F-Cancer fundraiser… Misguided Goddess II. This is our second time being involved with this wonderful art and charity event. We have been participating in photo shoots with some wonderful collaborators and we can’t wait to see the final outcomes. Linzo, Maggie and Amber have lent their expertise to these photo shoots and we are very proud of them! August 6th… Mark it on your calendars!

Our wonderful assistant Maggie is also available to take clients on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays, by appointment. She is in a mentored role within the team, and her services are educational. Maggie’s services are $30 for Women’s Cut’s, $20 for men’s, $35-$75 for colour services and $15-$35 for styling! What a deal! And she is amazing. And her chair side manner is impeccable.

Introducing New Hours!

We are happy to announce our expanded hours. Verve will now be open 7 days a week! Our new hours will include Sunday and Mondays 12-5. We will also offer evening appointments, by appointment, on Thursdays and Fridays! We are here for you no matter what your schedule is. So go ahead… call in and book your next appointment….

We are also welcoming our newest team mate Kelsey to the Verve roster. Kelsey joins us after working at a boutique salon on West 4th in Kitsilano for 2 years. This North Vancouver local decided that she wanted to work on the North Shore, and she wanted to work at Verve! She brings with her a wonderful understanding of Redken Haircolour and has taken many advanced courses with Redken. Kelsey also comes with a background as a makeup artist working with Luxury makeup brands. We really look forward to watching this ambitious stylist grow within our team!

Amber’s newest editorial with The Three Keys: Photographer Angela Fama, Stylist Joanna Kulpa and Makeup Artist Marie Pearce was recently published in New York based magazine see.7! Check it out!

We are so proud to announce that Linzo placed 3rd in the Women’s Trendy Cut and Style competition at the recent ABA Convention in Vancouver. The team enjoyed attending the 2 day convention, learning new techniques and products.

We are hosting a Fundraiser and Art Show on Sunday May 15th from 5-9. The proceeds from this event will go to The Ride to Conquer Cancer. We will have door prizes and raffles with sponsors Opus Art and Framing, Nicole Bridger, Second Wave, RDS, Peter George Art, Tom Bennett Horticulture, and Brown Sugar Jewelry. Amber just spent the past week in LA with the Shu Uemura Art of Hair Canadian Network. She had education from US Director Rick Cooper and UK Director Darren Fowler. These artists shared their unique experiences and techniques with the 30 Canadians selected to attend this special event. She was spoiled with inspiration and is now back home with so much energy and inspiration!
